How to Create Your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID

August 4, 2025

To take advantage of Summer’s support, you must first have access to your federal student loan data. This requires having a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID.

Your FSA ID is your personal username and password for StudentAid.gov, a federal student aid website where you can download your student loan data. Sharing this data with Summer helps us provide tailored support based on your specific situation.

(Note: Don’t reveal your FSA ID or password to anyone who contacts you. Summer, the Department of Education, and your federal student loan servicer will never call or email you asking for this information. Learn more about scams.)

You May Already Have an FSA ID

If you’ve ever completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form or signed a federal student loan agreement online, you likely already created an FSA ID. To check, try logging in at StudentAid.gov. If you don’t remember your credentials, you can use the “Forgot Username” or “Forgot Password” tools on the login page.

If you find that your information is already tied to an existing FSA ID, don’t try to create a new one, just recover access to the original. Creating duplicate accounts can cause delays or access issues.

How to Create an FSA ID

If you don’t have an FSA ID yet, here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to the official FSA ID creation page:
    https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch

  2. Click “Get Started”

  3. Enter your personal information:
    • Full legal name
    • Date of birth
    • Social Security number (if you have one)
    • Mailing address
  4. Create your login credentials:
    • Choose a unique username
    • Create a secure password (8–30 characters with letters and numbers)
  5. Provide your contact information:
    • A personal email address (not shared with anyone else)
    • A mobile phone number you have access to
  6. Set up challenge questions and answers. This will help recover your account if you forget your login info.

  7. Verify your email and phone number. You’ll have codes sent to both your email and phone number to verify them.

  8. Submit your information. If your information matches government records, your account will usually be fully activated within 1-3 days, sometimes sooner.

Creating an FSA ID only takes a few minutes, and once you’re done, you’ll be ready to access powerful tools and expert guidance designed to save you time and money on your student loans.
